We are getting close to a clear direction for this group that meets on prime Fridays of the month (i.e. 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 5th Friday of the month).

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! 5th Friday is movie night! Come and see a meaningful and motivational movie that can help inspire our activities the rest of the time.

Are we a bunch of math nerds? Not really, but math is cool and if there is interest …

Are we a bunch of computer geeks? (Well who isn’t these days?) Microcontroller technology is hot …

Music? sure. Movies? sure. Mobility? you bet. Still can’t figure it out? Come on down!

Vim For All!

Shawn has been kind enough to provide Vim free to everyone! Well it already was free to everyone, but he is actually showing us peons how to use it! He has scheduled 4 sessions starting at the most basic and up to creating your own extensions/plugins. The first one was tonight, but do not fret; it will be easy to catch up if you look over the notes and come down early before the second class (Shawn is usually here a few hours before).

Vim Classes – 1 – Getting and beginning Vim

Thurs Jan 20th @7:00pm ( Meetup / Facebook )
Location: 701 Seneca St, 4th Floor

Absolute intro to vim. If you’ve heard about how awesome and powerful vim is but haven’t used it or were put off by its learning curve this is the class to start. We’ll be going over the basic: getting and installing vim and editing a file.

Vim Classes – 2 – Efficient Editing

Thurs Jan 27th @7:00pm (Meetup / Facebook )
Location: 701 Seneca St, 4th Floor

This class we’ll be going over the bread and butter that is vim editing: Motions, operators and commands.

Vim Classes – 3 – Setting up your environment

Thurs Feb 3rd @7:00pm ( Meetup / Facebook )
Location: TBD!

Now that you’re becoming more proficient with vim it’s important that you make sure you’re comfortable while editing. So in this class we’ll go over setting up your environment, customizing your vimrc, picking a colorscheme and choosing a powerful set of plugins.

Vim Classes – 4 – Extending Vim

Thurs Feb 10th @7:00pm (Meetup / Facebook )
Location: TBD!

You’re a vim wizard at this point and editing faster than you’d ever thought possible, but you want to go faster and make vim even more powerful. In this class we’re going to go over modifying plugins to suit your needs, writing your own plugins, and writing your own colorscheme.

Prereqs: This class is going to involve scripting and assumes a certain level of programming knowledge but myself and the other attendees will glady aid anyone that’s unfamiliar.

We made our goal and exceeded it! Buffalo Lab received a total of $1610 in donations from all parties involved. Thank you so much guys!

Currently our Buffalo Lab owes $1400 in back rent and utilities to the building owners. This debt MUST be cleared by the end of the week. If this debt is not cleared, we fear we may be evicted. This seems like an insurmountable task, but it is only 14 people giving an extra $100! Please pledge and send in whatever you can to keep our space operational. It is only through your ongoing support that we exist.

Geeks without Borders

Geeks Without Borders (GWOB.org) is an international coalition of passionate problem solvers working together to assist people whose survival is threatened by lack of access to technology or communications due to violence, neglect, or catastrophe. Two representatives of this new organization (launching 10/10/10) will be coming in from out of town to talk about this project.

How do we do this? There are three main components:

Digital Mountaintop (DMT)

The Digital Mountaintop is a free, open communications hub, accessible via voice, text (SMS), plain old telephone (POTS), Skype (SIP), Google Voice, Twitter, Facebook, Email, Instant Messaging (IM)…and as many other networks we can connect to. In crisis situations, neighbors can ask for help simply by sending sending a message to the DMT, as long as they (or someone they know) can connect via any of the messaging or real-time communication methods it supports.

Cloud Collective (CC)

Geeks are naturally passionate problem solvers. The Cloud Collective is crowd-sourced problem solving in the cloud. Geeks and other technology-friendly people actively listen to the DMT via existing social networks like Twitter and Facebook. This is already happening, as we’ve learned through amazing stories about Geeks all over the world donating time, expertise, project management skills and resources during 9-11 in 2001, the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hatian earthquake in 2010. The CC is not meant to replace first-responders or boots on the ground, rather, it’s designed to empower them. It’s neighbors helping neighbors.

Water in the Well (WW)

In situations where human lives are threatened, there is no way to accurately predict the needs of a community in distress. A solution could be something as simple as being able to receive a wireless text message that indicates whether or not a well 5 miles away has water in it. WW allows for the easy creation and deployment of applications that sit on top of the DMT; applications custom built by members of the CC and rapidly deployed in response to requests shouted from the DMT.

Whistle while you work!

Our first official “Whistle while you work!” cleaning and work day was a success!

Lots of tasks got accomplished and many things were learned.

We want to thank everyone who attended the first day and hope to see more people at our next one this coming Saturday.
